About
John McNie, a man dedicated to always improving his craft and experiencing everything this world has to offer. John grew up in St. Petersburg, FL spending most of his days on any field that a sport was played on and sinking into the sand at the beach. Growing up as an incredibly hyper child, John was always up to something. It was not until John reached high school that he thought he found his passion in life, football.
John signed with Malone University in Canton, OH to play kicker/punter for the Pioneers. What John thought was going to be his best years and first step towards the NFL, turned out to be the 4 most challenging years of his life. Dealing with loneliness for the first time alongside an unfortunate familiar friend, depression. John struggled to find his true identity.
In his second year of university, John received his first camera, a Canon Rebel T6, on Christmas. This gift from John’s incredible and supportive parents led to John seeing the world from a completely different perspective. Instead of going throughout his day to day life distracted and only focused on where he “needed to be”. John started to pay attention again. Noticing the beauty of the world from his unique perspective, he began to carry his new camera everywhere with him.
After spending two years learning more and more about photography, John found his next journey into the medium, 35mm film. John purchased a Canon A-1 35mm film camera that was produced in 1978. With the test of having a limited amount of shots available on this camera per roll, John became more intentional with each shot he took. This was when he developed his love for architecture photography.
John traveled to many places within his first few years of photography. Locations including: New York City, Boston, Salt Lake City, St. Augustine, Pittsburgh, and many more. This led to John’s growth in the art. As he has begun his journey into photo journalism and street photography, John has discovered that his calling to photography is and has always been to capture unique moments in time that will never happen the same way again. Capturing that momentary emotion and overwhelming feeling of nostalgia has become John’s forte.
